Stepping Out

Stepping Out

They say that good shoes take you good places, and we've been going  places with our friends at Sabah since way back. We love their shoes and slippers for their quality of craftsmanship, timeless design and second-skin comfort. We love their business for their heartfelt commitment to uplifting their community of makers and wearers with generosity of spirit and joyous creativity. These are our kind of people.

Friend and Sabah founder Mickey Ashmore began his journey while living in Turkey, where he was gifted a pair of leather shoes that carried him along his adventures throughout the world. After wearing them bare, he sought a shoemaker who could recreate his beloved pair for him. A winding road of serendipity led him to a master craftsman in Gaziantep, a Turkish town on the Syrian border, whose family has been making these shoes since the 1800's. He made some customizations to the design to suit his needs, and a collaboration was born.

When Mickey and crew decided to open a second workshop stateside, they chose El Paso just west of us. Like Gaziantep, El Paso is home to a legacy of generational leather shoemakers who built the city's reputation as the Western boot capitol of the world. Here, Sabah could continue to explore new designs and collaborations working with some of the finest craftspeople in the world. We knew it was the perfect time to collaborate on a pair that reflected our birthplace and their new home in Texas.

The El Cosmico x Sabah Baba slippers are made of fine saddle leather that is found throughout the ranching culture here in far west Texas. El Paso artist Xochitl Buraciaga hand-painted the babas with a design inspired by El Cosmico's beloved bathrobes. The result is a wearable work of art and a reflection of the master talent of the Sabah collective.
